Sacred Heart Singles, family and friends, are invited to play cards (Hand and Foot, Five Crowns, Mahjong, etc.) the first and fourth Wednesdays of each month at 1:00 p.m. in the Upper Hall

British researchers recently surveyed 375 people who sang in a choir, sang alone, or played on a sports team. All of these activities contribute to emotional well-being, but people in choirs reported feeling happier than those who belted out tunes on their own.  Chorus members also rated their choirs as more meaningful social groups than athletes did their sports teams.  Studies show that the physical synchrony, acting in time with others, of choral singing could promote feelings of unity. An atheist Philosophy Professor will give a passing grade to all students who turn in a paper declaring God is dead. Josh cannot believe himself to do this and debates his college professor, risking a failing grade.  This movie has received great reviews; it's done well.  To quote Albert Einstein, "the more I study science, the more I believe in God." Join us for Movie Night in the Lower Hall on Wednesday, August 27, at 6:30 p.m.  We'll show another good movie and serve refreshments.

Sacred Heart of Jesus guys and gals are busy pricing and storing parishioners’ donations to the upcoming September Treasure Sale.  The Treasure Sale is a biennial fund raiser in support of Catholic education in Saline and Garland counties.  Parishioners at Sacred Heart bring their donations to the church on collection dates and a small army of SHJ guys assist in unloading these “treasures”.  The items are then turned over to the gals who price everything, sort it all into categories, pack it up in labeled boxes, and turn everything back over to the guys who take it to temporary storage. 

There will be two collection dates in August, the 20^th and 23^rd, when once again these generous guys and gals will resume their labors toward a successful 2014 Treasure Sale.  And things really heat up for the collections crew during September with six collection dates so that parishioners can comb through their little used or no longer needed possessions to see what might be donated.  Parishioners with larger items to donate will have the choice of having these items picked up if they are unable to transport them to church. 

The new year will be starting in September.  Hopefully we will have a fun time for the 2014-15 year.  We need to get a count of teams set-up by August 22.  Scheduling the groups takes a lot of time.  We would like to invite newcomers to the Village to contact Ed Harrigan.  It's a great way to meet other parish members for a good social time and a fun and easy-to-learn game of cards. This tournament, sponsored by our parish and the Knights of Columbus of our parish and those in Hot Springs, is being played this year at our own Magellan Golf Course on Saturday, August 23, at 9:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.  Nice prizes will be given for first, second and third place teams in a number of flights in this four-person scramble format.  A delicious barbeque spare rib lunch at Balboa Pavilion following the tournament is included in the $85 fee.  Remember, all the proceeds from your fee will go to benefit Catholic School education at St. John's in Hot Springs.  A separate woman's flight is something new this year for women who are interested.  You can sign-up as a team or individually, and teams will try to be assembled to make each one competitive.  Call Ralph Melenson at 915-0303 to sign-up or get more information.  This tournament promises to be a fun and rewarding day for all, especially for the students of St. John's School.  Sign-up as soon as possible.

We are putting together a team of walkers for the annual Village Cancer Walk, September 27, 2014 at 7:30 a.m., and would like you to be a part of our group.  No distance is required.  You can walk a few feet or five miles. Free fruit, coffee and water will be available before the walk and free hamburgers and hot dogs will be available after the walk, even if you don't leave the pavilion. The registration fee is $30 before August 1 which includes a free tee shirt.  After August 1, the cost increases to $35. The goal for 2014 is to register 600 walkers and raise $43,000 from sponsors, walkers, a silent auction, bake sale and from donations.  Our Church Ministry Team would like Sacred Heart to have a good-size team for this special event. Before the walk, each group will have a group photo taken, so come and be a part of this wonderful event!

Your baby will be completely formed by the end of the third month.  He may have begun moving his hands, legs, and head and opening and closing his mouth.  He is still too small for you to feel the movement.  His fingers and toes are now more distinct and have soft nails.  His hands are more developed than the feet, and his arms are longer than the legs.  Your baby's head is quite large compared to the rest of his body.  Hair may have started to form on the head. Tooth buds have formed under your baby's gums.  By the end of this month, the umbilical cord, which carries nutrients to your baby and takes wastes away, will be fully formed.  Please continue to pray for this special child of God.
