We are blessed to have two seminarians, Ben Riley and Isidro Negrete, as well as Aubrey Volpert (picture not available), a senior at Catholic High School in Little Rock, with us at Sacred Heart from July 19-29.  They will be helping with our Vacation Bible School July 24-28, and will be serving on the altar and accompanying Father Bill as he ministers to people in the hospital, nursing home or other venues.  Let's make these young men feel welcome among us and affirm them in their discernment of God's call in their lives.  For your information, Ben will be starting his fourth year studies in philosophy and Isidro his third year.

St. Mother TheresaThe next movie night has been scheduled for Wednesday, July 27, and will feature "The Letters."  Mother Theresa, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, is considered one of the greatest humanitarians of modern times.  Her selfless commitment changed hearts, lives and inspired millions throughout the world.  "The Letters" as told through personal letters she wrote over the last 40 years of her life, reveal a troubled and vulnerable woman who grew to feel an isolation and an abandonment by God.  The story is told from the point of view of a Vatican priest charged with the task of investigating acts and events following her death.  He recounts her life's work, her political oppression, her religious zeal and her unbreakable spirit. The movie will be shown in the Lower Hall at 6:00 p.m.  Please come and join us.

fortnight 4 freedom 270x140 no border animatedWe are Catholics.  We are Americans.  We are proud to be both, grateful for the gift of faith which is ours as Christian disciples, and grateful for the gift of liberty which is ours as American citizens.  To be Catholic and American should mean not having to choose one over the other.  Our allegiances are distinct, but they need not be contradictory, and should instead be complementary.  That is the teaching of our Catholic faith, which obliges us to work together with fellow citizens for the common good of all who live in this land.  That is the vision of our founding and our Constitution, which guarantees citizens of all religious faiths the right to contribute to our common life together.

The Fortnight for Freedom is from June 21 through July 4.  During the fortnight, we celebrate the feast days of Sts. Thomas More and John Fisher (June 22), St. John the Baptist (June 24), Sts. Peter and Paul (June 29) and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome, all great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power.  All these people died, in part, because they stood for religious freedom.  It is up to us, not necssarily to die for religious freedom in our country, but to be ready to speak up and speak out strongly when religious liberty is threatened.  I pray we have the courage and conviction to do so.  It will bless us and future fenerations of believers as well.
FlagPlease join us for a Fourth of July barbeque in the Lower Hall following the Mass (10:00 a.m.) and Patriotic Rosary (10:40 a.m.) on Monday, July 4.  Sponsors are our Parish Life Commission and the Knights of Columbus.  Hamburgers, hot dogs and cold drinks will be provided.  Please sign-up so we can get an estimate as to the number of people attending.  Guests are welcome.  Side dishes are appreciated and can be indicated when signing up.
Treasure SaleIt's that time again - our biennial Treasure Sale preparations are in the works.  Sale dates are September 23 and 24, 2016.  In our upcoming bulletins, you will find information on donations, dates and times for collection, and contact information for items you cannot transport yourself.  You will also find a volunteer sign-up sheet so that you can lend a hand and meet some other great and generous parishioners who support the Treasure Sale in numerous ways using their time and talents, muscles and experience; all to generate tuition support for our nearby Catholic schools, Our Lady of Fatima in Benton and St. John's in Hot Springs.

Please give your attention to this parish-wide endeavor.  Whether you help by donating no longer desired household items, or by supporting us in the collection or pricing of items during the week of the sale, cashiering and accounting on the sale dates, transporting to or setting up the goods for sale, we need YOU!  Keep the Treasure Sale in mind; pray about how you can make a difference in this particular parish undertaking that benefits nearby children who need our support to receive a Catholic education; and check future bulletins for inserts on the Sacred Heart of Jesus Treasure Sale.
2016 Faith of Our FathersCome join us for our first movie night coming this Wednesday, June 22, at 6:00 p.m. as we watch "Faith of Our Fathers," a story of fatherhood and a journey of brotherhood.  It is the story of two young men who are in search of their fathers who died 25 years ago in the Vietnam War.  This is a good and timely movie as we are showing it only days after Father's Day and at the start of the Fortnight for Freedom observance which actually starts June 21 and ends July 4. Fresh popcorn, snacks and drinks will be provided to those who join us, starting around 5:30 p.m.  (NOTE:  This is a change from a movie that was previsouly advertised in last week's bulletin.  It will be re-scheduled at a later date).
