Life Images: A young college student, considered to be an intellectual elitist, announced to a group of friends that he would believe nothing that he could not understand.  Another student, who lived on a farm nearby, turned to the intellectual and remarked, “As I drove to campus today, I passed a field in which some sheep were grazing.  Do you believe it?”
Sure, replied the young man.
Well, not far from the sheep, the student farmer said, some cows were chewing on the fresh grass.  Do you believe it?
Yeah, why not.
Well, not to far down the road there was a gaggle of geese feeding.  Do you believe this? Asked the student farmer.
I guess so, came the reply.
Well, said the student farmer, the grass the sheep ate will turn into wool; the grass the cows ate will turn into hair; the grass the geese ate will turn into feathers.  Do you believe this?
Sure I do, said the too-smart student.
But do you understand it?
Uh, no, said the intellectual student somewhat puzzled.

Life Dynamics:  You know if you live long enough, you will find there are a great many things you will believe without understanding.  Today we celebrate one of those hard to understand beliefs of the Catholic Church, The Most Holy Trinity.  God the Father. God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, one God three persons.

Faith Stance:  As followers of Christ, what we celebrate today is more than dogma.  What we celebrate is that to speak of the Trinity is to speak of God’s desire to reveal himself to us. The Trinity is not something that should push us away from God it is something that should draw us closer to God.

Faith Images:  Our Gospel reading today when I first read it and started working on my homily confused me.  We have just had two very special Sunday liturgies, the Ascension and Pentecost, which tells us of the lifting up of Jesus to heaven and then the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles.  So why does this Gospel passage say, “When they saw Jesus, they worshiped, but they doubted.”  It is a contradiction from what has happened the last two Sundays.

Matthew’s Gospel does not have the Ascension or Pentecost, this passage is the end of Matthew’s Gospel and is used on this the feast of the most Holy Trinity to show us the commissioning of the Apostles to Baptize in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Here we note that Jesus says in the name of not in the names of therefore showing that there is but one God.  Our faith is built on this dogma of the Church and in the commissioning of the Apostles to go out to all nations making disciples and to baptize.

Implications:  The feast of the Holy Trinity invites us to examine several things.  In invites us to ask who God is.  It calls us to see what God does.  And it reminds us of what God wants of us in return for what he has given to us.  God ask of us obedience.  Obedience means to listen intensely.  God wants us to listen to Him.  The mystery of the Trinity can begin to be understood if we see the Trinity as the different ways God has loved us.

He is Father/Creator.  He is Savior.  He makes us holy so that we can one day return to Him in Paradise.

The Trinity is about being loved by God.  The Trinity, a doctrine about God’s desire to express Himself to us and to give us love, demands a response.  How do we respond to God?  We should be responding by rejoicing.

By sending his son to save us and His Holy Spirit to guide us, God has shown his love for each of us.  Do we show our love to God by really trying to lead the life he has asked us to live?

Close:  Do you believe in God? Do you believe in God the Father the creator of the universe?  Do you believe in Jesus Christ the son of the Father?  Do you believe that the Holy Spirit has been present with the Father and the Son from all eternity?  Then you believe in the Trinity even though you do not understand it.  As we say the Creed in this Mass give some thought to the beliefs that you are professing.
