I have a tough assignment today.  I need to say something that will convince you that this week is the most important week of our year.  Part of the reason that is so hard is because we love Christmas, we love joy not sadness.  After all, Christmas is what makes us “Christians” - isn’t it?  Actually to be Christians we have to go from Christmas to Calvary, from Bethlehem to Jerusalem, from crib to cross.  This week is so important because it is when the two most powerful of enemies clash, the real superpowers:  death and life.   This is the week that life and love conquers sin and death, the week we move through death to life.  For us, as Christians, none of this, Christmas, Lent, our lives, nothing makes any sense without the events of Holy Week.  This week we have the ultimate opportunity to encounter Christ in the Triduum, the 3 days that culminate our Lenten journey.

Many of us have spent time with a dying loved one or friend.  We know it is a sacred time, a holy time, a time when we can really feel God’s presence.  A time we would never trade or give up for anything.  And we know that when people are not able to be with a loved one on that final journey they often feel an emptiness.  Something they can never get back, is missing.

This week we have the opportunity to spend time with a dying friend.  And all we have to do is BE there, be there with him, be there for him.  Maybe we haven’t been able to spend as much time with him in the past as we would have liked to.  Maybe there were times we were mad at him and thought he had abandoned us.  Maybe there were times we just forgot about him.  It doesn’t matter.  We can be with him this week.  Be with him Thursday evening and share a last meal with him.  We can be with him Friday evening and tenderly kiss his deathbed, the cross.  And we can be with him AND for the first time in 40 days shout Alleluia at the Easter Vigil as that light that was snuffed out on Friday BURST into glorious flames to light up the world.

Was this suffering necessary?  Was this death necessary?  Christ says yes, we needed this and yes, we were worth it.
